Elgol's world holds many mysteries and wonders, but perhaps none as mysterious as Arran herself. Arran has arrived in Ormiscaig, where she learns to face both her fears and her destiny. She is the key to destroying the cursed Dalheian--an object that's beginning to ruin both worlds, an object sent to Ormiscaig thousands of years ago by the traitorous king Arguth. With the help of the notorious wood nebs, enchanting fairies, and an army of merfolk, the battle for Ormiscaig starts with the ater, dangerous creatures corrupted by the evil growing in the ocean. The recently awoken kings of Scotland join Arran and Elgol to search through time, Scottish folklore, and prophecies to avert the impending doom.

Mabel Cowie's second book is even better than the first installment in this series. I'm now waiting for book number three. This book takes place almost exclusively in the magical land of Ormiscaig with occasional glimpses of life back at the castle in Scotland. The book's heroine, Arran becomes more than she ever expected. I loved her negative reaction when she finds who/what she really is. Arran and Elgol work together throughout this book to stop the evil that has invaded his beautiful home world.Ormiscaig is a wonderful land that I'd like to visit with its unicorns, moving trees with wood nebs living in them, mermaids/mermen, scary mer-people called Ater, Selkies, beautiful residence in a cave alight with moondust lamps, ancient kings, beautiful fairies, magical islands, and more.
Although this book is more than 100 pages longer than the first I felt that it moved more quickly. There are a lot of characters so check the handy character guide at the end if you get confused at first trying to remember who and what everyone is.
This is a good family book and I think it's appropriate for anyone ten or older. There are a few incidents that may be disturbing for younger readers. I'm a grandma and I liked it a lot. Good job, Ms. Cowie!

Prophecies 'Neath Ancient Ruins Lie Book Two Mabel D F Cowie Cheryl Carvajal Tone Fluge 9781480287228 Books Reviews
I think this is such a fun story. It is a mix between Downton Abby and Fablehaven. Great for the whole family.
You know a book is good when you stay up all night reading it... )
Now I'm impatiently waiting for the next book...hurry up Mabes!
After reading the first book of the series, Awakenings, I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book. From the very first chapter of Prophecies, I was already feeling even more emotionally attached to the characters than I was in the first book. The author does a beautiful job of portraying each emotion of the characters, and describes each setting with such immaculate detail that you can really picture yourself in the shoes of each character. Each page captured my attention, and made it difficult for me to put the book down. Several times I was near tears because of traumatic events that happen to Arran and her friends during their adventure! It was strange to pull myself out of this beautiful world that the author has created and place myself back into reality. I'd rather be in Ormiscaig ) I highly recommend this book to anyone.
